In 2011, a specialist advised Mariah Mansvelt Beck to start using organic tampons and pads. This was the first time she’d ever thought about her sanitary choices. Upon investigation, she found that there was a lot more to tampons and pads than meets the eye.
She started doing some more in-depth research with her good friend, Wendelien Hebly, and what they learnt shocked them both. They discovered that not only are many tampons and pads made from synthetic materials, containing plastics and perfume, but that there are also no specific rules or legal requirements when it comes to listing ingredients on feminine care packaging.
Strange, considering that the vagina is one of the most absorbent parts of the body.
That’s why in 2014, Mariah and Wendelien decided to set up Yoni. Their tampons, pads and liners offer women the same comfort as other products but are made exclusively of 100% certified organic cotton. Because, as they are proud of saying on their website, ‘Chemicals are not for pussies’.
