Air pollution monitoring company Aclima is attempting to develop a comprehensive, mobile environmental sensor network that covers nine counties and over 5,000 square miles in the San Francisco Bay area.

It's clear that automobiles are a key contributor to air pollution in the Bay Area.

Aclima is announcing that it plans to map air pollutants and greenhouse gases block-by-block throughout the San Francisco Bay Area region, which is home to 7.6 million people.

“Once you have this information, it becomes difficult to understand how we lived without it,” says Davida Herzl, whose 10-year-old company, Aclima, delivers block-by-block air-quality measurements and analysis.

Aclima Inc. is on a mission to gather air quality data. Now it has $24 million to double its team size and expand its network of sensors for collecting data.

Air pollution is one of the leading causes of disease, disaster and devastation. More than 5 million people die each year from contaminated air — and the trend is unfortunately increasing as cities from London to Lucknow are failing to curb pollution.

Aclima, a San Francisco-based company which builds Internet-connected air quality sensors and runs a software platform to analyze the extracted intel, has closed a $24 million Series A to grow the business including by expanding its headcount and securing more fleet partnerships to build out the reach and depth of its pollution maps.

Climate Action caught up with Davida Herzl, CEO and Co-Founder, Aclima, ahead of the Sustainable Innovation Forum, organised on 13-14 November 2017 alongside COP23.

You’ve likely heard me say, “You can’t manage what you can’t measure.” It’s meant to be a rallying call for the incorporation of data and technology into water management. For Silicon Valley startup Aclima, “You can’t fight what you can’t measure.”

At first blush, it may seem like one of those science fiction movies about exploring the fourth dimension, but start-up Aclima is deploying sensor networks that help make "the invisible world around us visible" by describing what is in the air, its CEO told VERGE 2015.

The Center for Data Innovation spoke with Davida Herzl, cofounder and chief executive officer of Aclima, an environmental sensor company based in San Francisco. Davida discussed Aclima’s partnership with Google Maps to install air quality sensors on Street View mapping cars, as well as the benefits of deploying large scale air quality sensing networks.
